Recording Bob Chilcott's St John Passion

Wells Cathedral Choir was hailed by Gramophone Magazine as ‘probably the finest English cathedral choir at the moment’ in ‘world-class form’. The choir has made at least one recording a year over the last 20 years (see below for a complete list) for notable labels such as Hyperion, Sigma, and Regent Records. Many of the recordings have received very positive reviews for our over the years.  Some of these can be read here.

Sample tracks from a few recordings are provided below and are an excellent example of the extraordinary high standards that our choristers achieve. We hope you enjoy listening to them!

A Ceremony of Carols

Each year, on the Saturday closest to Candlemas, the Choristers mark the end of the Christmas season with a performance of Benjamin Britten's 'A Ceremony of Carols'. This much-loved annual event is usually performed to a sell-out crowd.

In 2025, the Choristers made an audio-visual recording of their performance directed by Alexander Hamilton, the then Acting Director of Music, with Olivia Jaguers playing the harp. The recording was released on YouTube and has since been viewed over 100,000 times. You can watch the recording below.

Conductor: Alexander Hamilton
Harpist: Olivia Jageurs
Audio Producer: Barry Rose

Recorded in Wells Cathedral, 17-19 June 2024, thanks to the generous support of Wells Cathedral Chorister Trust and the Choir Schools’ Association. Production by David Hinitt and Classical Films (www.classicalfilms.co.uk).
